Devlog #1 My First Game Jam
Hi! I'm Kai, a recent grad who finally has some time to complete a game jam. I decided to take it a little easy on myself and participate in a longer jam, Lost Relic Games' Game Jam to be exact! As of writing this post there are 4 whole days left in the jam. Which is great for me since I have mostly just completed some art assets for the game. However, my GDD (Game Design Document) is fully loaded with info as to what I want the game to be. In fact, I've been editing it as I go. If you want to take a peek at what has gone into developing this game so far, feel free to click this link to view my google doc. Since this is a jam game, I'm not sure if this will be my only devlog post or not, but from here on out I will try to update once a day!
In the meantime, give this page a follow to know when the game is finished! I'm a notorious procrastinator, so it may come down to the last second.
The theme of this game jam is connection, and my first thought was Wi-Fi connections. Originally, the player would be attempting to reconnect the wifi throughout their neighborhood. However, this scope felt a little out of reach for the project, so I narrowed it down to an internet cafe.
I then needed a reason for the wifi to go out that could be fixed with something that had tangible parts. I decided to go with overheating routers, which would require the player to find an efficient way to cool them off. Why would they overheat in the first place? The cheap owner of the internet cafe would want to cut costs by storing them all in a dirty closet and refuse to run the AC...
Once by basic plot was fleshed out, I got to work creating the cafe in a pixel art style. I first created a really basic mockup of how I wanted the layout to look. I then set to creating individual sprites and just placing them to see how they all fit together. The little rectangle in each image is the current stand in for my player to ensure everything looks right size wise. As of now I have most of the cafe' complete (creating a cool tiling floor that didn't hurt your eyes was the hardest part). I'm still working on the rest of the assets as well as finishing up that snazzy purple snack stand, so I better hop back to it!
See you in the next update!
